Food on Fridays: Am I a Foodie? Also, Homemade Brownies

fof(smaller button below)

For the Food on Fridays carnival, any post remotely related to food is welcome—though we love to try new dishes, your post doesn’t have to be a recipe. We’re pretty relaxed over here, and stories and photos are as welcome as menus and recipes.

When your Food on Fridays contribution is ready, just grab the broccoli button (the big one above or smaller option at the bottom) to paste at the top of your post. It ties us together visually.

Then fill in the boxes of Simply Linked to join the fun! [Read more...]

There and Back Again: Where I’m From

Melissa Brotherton followed through with a poetry prompt I’ve seen here and there in literary circles for years: “Where I’m From.” Using resources like one from George Ella Lyon or this template that Melissa recommended, you can write one, too.

I’d love to continue tweaking, so please consider this a draft.

Where I’m From

by Ann Kroeker

I am from the persimmon tree, ripe fruit dropping, splitting, squishing soft into the grassy lawn below. I am from sweet-spring lilac and lily-of-the-valley. I am from clover and crown vetch, hollyhocks and honeysuckle, peonies and pansies.

I am from soybean and corn fields, hay and straw, and Black Angus cattle grazing in the pond field. [Read more...]

Curiosity Journal: June 29, 2011

Each Wednesday I’m recording a Curiosity Journal, a recap of the past week. Tag words are: reading, playing, learning, reacting and writing.

Some of you have mentioned that you may begin posting a Curiosity Journal, as well. Leave your link in the comments so that we can visit and enjoy your weekly review.

Reading

I finished The Day I Became an Autodidact: and the advice, adventures, and acrimonies that befell me thereafter, by Kendall Hailey. With satisfaction (it was a good read) and melancholy (but now it’s over), I’m moving on to The Happiness Project. [Read more...]

A Turn for the Better

“I think you have some shingles for me,” I said, as I greeted the driver of a delivery truck.

“It says I’m supposed to put them in front of the garage…in front of the garage…in front of the garage.” He chuckled and pointed to the order form. Sure enough, there it was in capital letters, at least three or four times: “IN FRONT OF THE GARAGE.”

I laughed at his joke. “Well, let me move my van so you can get them up the driveway and ‘in front of the garage!’” [Read more...]

Some of you have mentioned that you may begin posting a Curiosity Journal, as well. Monica started up her Curiosity Journals last week, so if she publishes one today, I’ll send you over.

Reading: The Day I Became an Autodidact: and the advice, adventures, and acrimonies that befell me thereafter, by Kendall Hailey, is totally distracting me from all other titles.

Playing: Since I’m a miserable failure at playing games, I’ll show you the next-closest thing to play, and it involves my new best friend. [Read more...]

So Be It

Our pastor provided a John Wesley prayer in the bulletin—something we could pray as an action point following Sunday’s message on “Thy Will Be Done.”

I tore out the prayer and taped it into my journal:

I am no longer my own, but thine. [Read more...]

Curiosity Journal: 6-15-11

I’m recording an occasional Curiosity Journal, a recap of the past week or so. Tag words are: reading, playing, learning, reacting and writing.

:::

Some of you have mentioned that you may begin posting a Curiosity Journal, as well. Monica started up Curiosity Journals this week, so mosey on over to her place (after reading my spectacular entries below) to link up HERE.

Reading: Guess what? I’m still reading Sophie’s World.  I really do like it; it’s just that I get distracted with lots of things, including other books. [Read more...]

Dear Kohls, Thank You for Options!

This is a special thank-you and shout-out to Kohl’s for offering a wide selection of swimwear that included some modest options for my teen daughters and myself.

My middle daughter chose a blue version of this Nike brand top, which comes way down and covers her midriff. She paired it with bottoms that the Kohls.com website described as “scoop” bottoms. Not sure what I think about that name, but my daughter says she feels well covered in this two-piece. [Read more...]
