Mega Memory Month 2011 Final Celebration

Mega Memory Month January 2011

Final Celebration

It’s the last day of the month, January 31st, and Mega Memory Month comes to a close.

Let’s share our projects, our progress, our successes…no matter how much or how little you were able to absorb. Seriously, every word is progress.

Link up your posts via Simply Linked or create something to publish on the Facebook Event page for Mega Memory Month (write comments on the wall).

So…this wasn’t my best Mega Memory Month, to say the least. [Read more...]

Food on Fridays: Returning Thanks

Here at the Food on Fridays carnival, any post remotely related to food is welcome—though we love to try new dishes, your post doesn’t have to be a recipe.

If you want, you could join the book club on Mondays at TheHighCalling.org and post your responses to the essays in The Spirit of Food; because, you see, we’re pretty relaxed over here. Posts like that are as welcome as menus and recipes. [Read more...]

Get Used to It

I’ve piled red apples—honey crisp and gala—into a plastic flowered bowl on the kitchen table; oranges and pears in a wooden bowl on the counter; and vegetables—carrots, kale, chard, celery, cucumber, red peppers—into the crisper drawer in the fridge.

I set out a bowl of cherries, too, because I’ve heard life is like that.

The reason for this wide variety of freshness? Why the investment in vitamins, minerals and fiber? [Read more...]

MMM 2011 Progress Report #4

Welcome to Mega Memory Month (MMM) Progress Report #4.

Please note that if I counted correctly, we have one week left, my friends.

I thought I’d mention it, you know, to send you into a memorizing frenzy, cramming it in last minute. I’ll send you some Mountain Dew if you think you’re going to do an all-nighter.

Don’t forget: next Monday is our Final Celebration! Plan ahead now for how you might present a creative culmination of your work. Some ideas: [Read more...]

The Spirit of Food: Food Heritage and The Occasional Vegetarian

Food Heritage

Last week’s TheHighCalling.org book club selection of essays (from The Spirit of Food: 34 Writers on Feasting and Fasting toward God) included Denise Frame Harlan’s essay “And She Took Flour.”

As I followed her story of learning to eat (and eventually cook) real food, I sat almost as stunned as she did when a professor read excerpts from The Supper of the Lamb to her class:

[T]ears streamed from his eyes as he read about ‘The Inconsolable Heartburn…by which the heart looks out astonished at the world and in its loving, wakes and breaks at once.’ This heartburn, Capon says, [Read more...]

Old, Calloused Heart

One evening when my kids were little, I was flipping through TV stations and landed on a Christian channel. I got called away and left the TV on, thinking I’d be right back.

By the time I returned, the program had switched to something new. My daughter was in the room frantically scribbling numbers onto a piece of paper, almost breaking down in tears.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“I’m writing down the number on the screen!” she exclaimed. “It says ‘Call now because the children need your help!’ but I can’t write the numbers down fast enough.” [Read more...]

MMM 2011 Progress Report #2

Welcome to Mega Memory Month (MMM) Progress Report #2.

If you’re just stopping by, it’s definitely not too late to jump in as a Mega Memory Month participant. Just select a passage seven to ten verses (or sentences) shorter than you would have otherwise. It won’t be as mega as it might have been, but it can still be plenty big.
