Radio interview: I was interviewed this week for WMBI’s “This Is The Day” with Nancy Turner (Moody Radio, Chicago; link opens a new window with an MP3 recording of the show). To do it justice, the reading at the end should have been delivered half as fast as I read it. It was Ann Voskamp’s poetic story “Still to Hear the Song” that she graciously allowed me to include in the book. Wish Ann V. could have read it.

Make-Do Mondays with Ann

This is a very simple make-do thought, but on super-humid days (like Sunday), the clothes have a hard time drying on the line outside. The wind might have helped, but I didn’t even bother trying.

I could have resorted to the dryer, but I chose not to.

There’s nothing wrong with a clothes dryer, of course. But my dryer tends to shrink clothes, even on low.

And when I hang up clothes, I can forget about them and they don’t get all wrinkly. They just keep hanging, which, if anything, makes them a little straighter (as opposed to the wrinkled heap I face if I forget to pull things out of the dryer when it buzzes).

The Belgian Wonder had turned the air conditioner on, and a vent just below those striped pants on the left blows cool, dry air into the space. So I decided to hang up this load of darks in the laundry room, like I do in winter.

clotheshanging

I also have a lightweight, portable drying rack I bought years ago at Wal-Mart. That works well, too, and I can set it up for the clothes to be drying in whatever room is most convenient.

It feels strange to have things hanging in the house on a summer day, but the air-conditioned location worked well. Without humidity fighting the process, the clothes dried fast.

How do you make do?

Meet Henry!

The “Name That Boy” contest is officially over.

Garnering 31 percent of the votes, we have a winner.

The “not so fast” boy’s name is…

Henry!

notsofastcoverartjustboy

More than one person suggested Henry, so the names went into the box lid to be drawn by my flesh-and-blood boy.

Who won the second complimentary copy of Not So Fast?

Jane Anne, of Gravity of Motion!

janeanne

Congratulations, Jane Anne, and thanks for helping to name Henry!

He is no longer the nameless, burdened boy who looks a tiny bit bewildered.

He is still burdened. He still looks a tiny bit bewildered.

But now he’s Henry.

And I hope that one day, Henry’s family will find a pace that respects their limits.

Because I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking Henry needs a break.

On the Air with Ann

I was interviewed by phone about Not So Fast on a station in Minneapolis, MN, for the “Live! with Jeff & Lee” show.

(Wait, let’s pause for a second to count how many prepositional phrases I packed into that first sentence. What’s your count? I think it’s six if you count the one that squeezes in with the name of the show. And the sentence isn’t even that long. Okay, well, I’m leaving it that way. Moving on…)

It’s hard to know what to cover during these interactions. The book tackles a wide range of topics, but we only have time to talk about a few things on the air.

If you’re curious, you can listen to the MP3 archive HERE.

Food on Fridays: Chocolate-Chip Cookie Trick

fof

(alternative button below)

Here at the Food on Fridays carnival, any post remotely related to food is welcome. Recipes are enjoyed, but you can write about Applebee’s appetizers or explain how to get ketchup stains out of clothes. Ketchup is food, see, so it relates.

In other words, the Food on Fridays parameters are not at all narrow. I think of it as a virtual pitch-in where everyone brings something to share; even if the content of one item is unrelated to the rest, we sample it all anyway and have a great time.

When your Food on Fridays contribution is ready, just grab the broccoli button (the big one above or the new smaller option at the bottom) to paste at the top of your post and join us through Mr. Linky.

Here’s a Mr. Linky tutorial:

Write up a post, publish, then return here and click on Mr. Linky below. A screen will pop up where you can type in your blog name and paste in the url to your own Food on Fridays post (give us the exact link to your Food on Fridays page, not just the link to your blog).

You can also visit other people’s posts by clicking on Mr. Linky and then clicking participants’ names–you should be taken straight to their posts.

Food on Fridays with Ann

I was at a birthday party Thursday evening, so I didn’t have time to make chocolate-chip cookies before Food on Fridays had to go live.

But I’ll make them in the morning when I wake up, so come back to see the post updated with a photo.

Because ideally you should see for yourself if this trick will work for your family.

It’s a chocolate-chip cookie trick.

A family member explained it.

It revolutionized our cookies.

Ready?

This is how you can enjoy rich butter flavor and avoid having the cookies flatten out.

Instead of the two sticks of butter that the Nestle recipe calls for, use 1 1/2 (one and one-half) sticks.

For the last 1/4 cup (represented by the missing half stick), substitute vegetable oil.

The cookies taste and look great. They rise just enough (and settle just right) without flattening out like a pancake.

Try it.

Report back.

And now, a series of photos chronicling this morning’s batch.

2sticks

Instead of two full sticks…

halfstick

One and one-half sticks. The other half can be saved for the next batch of chocolate-chip cookies, or use it to butter corn on the cob.

cookiesonstone

I use a small Pampered Chef ice cream scoop to form the balls. The lighting was weird for that photo.

cookiesbaked

Here they are on the stone, freshly baked. I may have left them in a minute too long, but they’ll be good. By the way, I substitute some whole wheat flour for some of the white flour.

cookiepuffy

Here’s an angle that shows the degree of puffiness the cookies maintain. They spread a little, but not too much.

cookiessingle

Here’s a single cookie. I got a little carried away with the photos this morning. I suppose you’ve seen more than enough by now, but since I don’t seem to know when to call it quits, here’s one more…

cookiescool

As you can see, they handle well. I can easily slide them off the stone and onto the cooling rack without the cookies bending, breaking in half, falling to pieces or leaving a trail of crumbs. Once cool, these stack well on a plate or in a storage tin/tub to share with others.

Thus ends the slide show.

Now I shall try to eat something breakfast-y while the smell of chocolate-chip cookies wafts throughout the kitchen.

Simplicity and a Calm, Relaxed Pace

whiteroom

This week, I’m told, is “Simplify Your Life Week.”

We could talk about how to declutter, how to eliminate two or three things from our schedules, or how to streamline the laundry room.

But I think simplifying my life in a way that profoundly impacts my daily experience must begin at a deeper level….

Learn about Not So Fast: Slow-Down Solutions for Frenzied Families

"Name That Boy" Poll

A lot of really great names were proposed (with a few repeats). Some were sweet little boy names, some were symbolic, and a few sounded like names that the little boy inherited from a high-achieving great-grandpa.

After a grueling evaluation, I narrowed them down to just a few.

By the way, a friend dipped into his creative juices to come up with (among others) Loaded-Down Logan, Swamped Skyler, Stressed Sammy, and Tied-Up Trevor. His family already has two copies of book, however, so he asked to be left out of the poll. Another suggestion that wasn’t submitted in time was from my friend Bill who suggested “Bill” because the boy will eventually have to “pay” for his busyness in one way or another.

I’ve never used the poll feature on WordPress before, so if it doesn’t work, please let me know. I’ll figure out a plan B.

Here’s how it will work:

Vote once for the name you think best fits the boy on the cover of Not So Fast (see below for one last look).

Voting will stay open until 9:00 (EDT) Saturday morning, August 8.

nsfcoverartcropped

The person who suggested the name that gains the most votes will win a copy of the book.

NOTE: If the name that wins the vote was suggested by more than one person, I’ll do another random drawing between the two or three (or more) who suggested it.

Ready?

Name that boy!

"Name That Boy" Contest: First Book Giveaway Winner

A big thanks to all who left comments and suggested names for the little boy on the cover of Not So Fast!

There were two ways to win. The first was to to enter the drawing by leaving a comment with a name suggestion. Each person who commented was entered into a drawing.

I wrote each person’s name on a strip of paper, folded each strip in half, and dropped them into a box lid.

namesinlid

One of the kids drew out the winner.

namedrawn

“Who won?” I asked.

“I’m not sure,” she replied. She was expecting the name of a person, not the name of an animal (and my poor handwriting didn’t help).

namewinner

The winner of the random drawing is Llama Momma!

(Why did I cut out the second part of her name? I wrote “Llama Mama” at first, then scribbled “Momma” over the top of “Mama” when I realized I’d spelled it wrong; so it was hard to read and too embarrassing to show in the photo.)

The second way to win is for your proposed name to gain the most votes in a poll. I’ll set up the poll soon so that the voting can begin.

Congratulations, Llama Mama Momma!
