January 2009 MMM Celebration Day is Here!

mmm

It’s hard to believe, but Mega Memory Month officially ends today.

And that means today, Friday,[Updated: Obviously too many snow days threw me off--today is Saturday], January 31st, is MMM Celebration Day!

fireworks

Not only have I ordered this modest fireworks display, I also decorated the blog in honor of this event — I’ve situated the promised balloons you previewed the other day. My kids are delighted, as I’ve never put balloons on my blog before — not even for one of our birthdays:

Scripture Stickies giveaway!

[Deadline is past for entering the Scripture Stickies Giveaway!

Winners will be announced Monday.]

And there are gifts, too! You can enter to win one of three packs of Scripture Stickies memory tools by leaving your name and contact info in the comments of this post — you have until 5:00 p.m. EST Sunday to enter. At that time, I’ll draw three names from the comments. I’ll contact the winners right away or after the Superbowl and announce the winners on the blog Monday, as well.

Scripture Stickies work like Post-It notes – just peel off the backing and stick the printed verses wherever you’ll see them often (for example, on the back of your child’s high chair, around your travel mug, or in the laundry room….sigh.). They’re a convenient way to get started with memory work. Visit their site to see the different themes and packets they’ve created. Take advantage of a special offer for my blog readers: Enter “MMM” as a coupon code, and you’ll receive 20% off your entire order!

And Now…The Projects

Without further ado, let’s enjoy the final presentations of some of our Mega Memory Month participants.

If you’re an official participant in January 2009′s Mega Memory Month, fill out your name and provide the url for your own MMM Celebration Day post in Mr. Linky. I’ll update when possible to put them right in the text of this post (Mr. Linky doesn’t do that automatically in WordPress, for which I am a tad resentful).

Here’s my offering:

For Mega Memory Month, I attempted to finish John 14, which I started back in October, and dip into John 15. I also memorized a poem.

First is a recitation of “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” by Robert Frost.

I suggest you turn down the volume, as the combination of my loud voice and some wind noise at the beginning might surprise you or damage your equipment. It’s up to you. I just don’t want you to ruin your speakers on a poem. That would be embarrassing to explain to the Geek Squad:

(Young man takes laptop and begins dismantling it after you explain that your speakers are toast.) “What blew out your speakers?” he asks. “Van Halen? AC/DC? Lynyrd Skynyrd?”

“No,” you begin, “it was, uh, well, a mom-blogger reciting a pensive Robert Frost poem.”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjbnPylE-YM]

You know, you probably should just go ahead and tell them you were cranking up U2. Don’t tell them it was Frost.

Anyway, I shall now commence to put you all at ease regarding your final presentations by typing out John 14 & the first few verses of John 15  (NIV) imperfectly, from memory (mistakes are crossed out and then corrected in orange).

John 14

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me, that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will send  give you another Counselor to be with you forever–the Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.  Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father. My Father will love him, and I too will love him and show myself to him.”

Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”

Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

I will not speak with you much longer. All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I leave with give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

You have heard me say, ‘I am going away and I will come am coming back again to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. I have told you this now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.

“Come now; let us leave.”

John 15

I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off any branch that does not bears no fruit, while any every branch that does bear fruit, he prunes so that it will bear even more fruitful. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit on its own by itself; it must remain in the vine. So you must Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.

Updated:

Many thanks to all who participated in Mega Memory Month and the Celebration Day! Please stay tuned–in a few months MMM will return to give you another 30 or 31 days of memory accountability and inspiration.

Meanwhile, if you want to take on another challenge, consider Tim Challies’ “Memorizing Scripture Together”, and ongoing memory commitment where you tackle long passages recommended by Tim; or, WalkSlowlyLiveWildly’s yearlong project of memorizing the entire book of James:  The James Challenge.

Food on Fridays: Thick and Chewy, Fast and Easy Pizza Dough

fof

Food on Fridays is a carnival inviting people to yack about food!

Bloggers can link up their food-themed posts via Mr. Linky; readers without blogs can leave their fascinating food-thoughts in the comments.

And while I love a great recipe and will gratefully click over to find out what someone recommends, let me assure you that any topic remotely related to food is great.

For example, if you want to share your shock over recent reports of mercury-tainted high fructose corn syrup? Or the massive salmonella peanut-butter poisoning? Perfect. Write about it. Link to Food on Fridays. We want easy access to your food frustrations!

Official Food on Fridays Participants

2. Andrea at HopeAnnFaith (Cheeseburgers)

3. Sarah at Beauty in the Mundane (Yummy Pancakes)

4. Tammy at This Pilgrimage (Pineapple Perfection)

5. Esther at Tuesday Afternoons (Steel Cut Oatmeal)

6. Shalee at Shalee’s Diner (Ancient Chinese Secret)

Here’s my Food on Fridays offering:

Every Friday I notice a trend in the blog stats.

Just that one day a week–Friday–people stumble upon my blog not because of overnight steel cut crock pot oatmeal, but because of something else I wrote about years ago:

Thick and Chewy, Fast and Easy Pizza Dough

If you want a quick dinner solution on a Friday night and would like to save a few bucks, try making your own pizza–even the dough!

I got the original recipe and instructions from one of the Tightwad Gazette books years ago, but have altered it to fit what works for me.

For your convenience, here’s the recipe reprinted from the original post, in case you need it this very night.

Thick and Chewy, Fast and Easy Pizza Dough

1/2 – 3/4 c. warm water

1 T. dry active yeast

1 t. sugar (for the yeast)

2 c. flour (I use half whole wheat and half white, but most kids would balk at that the first time)

1 T. vegetable oil (I use olive oil)

1/2 t. salt

(also, I double and sometimes triple this for my family of six–without needing to increase the amount of yeast–and frankly, I don’t measure any of the ingredients precisely anymore. I just toss in what looks to be about right and it turns out find almost every time. But you might not want to try that the first time.)

1. Combine 1/4 c. water with yeast and sugar. Stir to dissolve the yeast, set aside until bubbly about 5 minutes.

2. Mix flour and salt, then add the oil.

3. Stir the yeast mixture into the flour mixture, adding water until it forms a ball you can work with. I start with a wooden spoon and then switch to using my fingers to squish and mix. Knead for a few minutes (I just knead it in the bowl until it seems to be the consistency of, well, pizza dough). The original instructions said to cover with plastic wrap or another bowl and let stand for 10 minutes, but I go ahead and spread it into the pan(s) and let it do it’s mini-rise there.

4. While messing around with the toppings–chopping things up, calling the kids to help spread the sauce, and pulling out the cheese–the dough rises enough.  I don’t preheat the oven. Instead, I stick the pizza(s) in the oven with it cold, and let the crusts rise a little more as the oven heats up.

5. Put all the toppings on and bake at 375 or 425˚ for 10 or 15 minutes (or until done–I lift with a spatula to see if it’s brown on the bottom as well as watch the cheese). It may take 20 minutes for a thick crust.

Voila. Thick and chewy, fast and easy.

And cheap.

More Friday Carnivals

[Drop in again tomorrow--Saturday, January 31st--for the Mega Memory Month Celebration!  Read more about it here. There's even a ScriptureStickies giveaway you can enter to add to the party atmosphere. Participants have been invited to link up with their final projects celebrating what they worked on during the month. Take note: MMM is hosted by someone blogging in the Eastern Standard Time Zone. Plan accordingly.]

MMM Celebration Countdown

hourglass

Just days from now–you could almost say hours from now–this Saturday, January 31st, marks the end of Mega Memory Month.

mmm

After a month of hard work, prayer, and diligent repetition of the passage you’ve selected…I’d say it’s a day to celebrate! At our house, nothing says celebration like balloons:

balloons

Well, to top off a celebration, isn’t it nice to have a gift or two?

The good people at ScriptureStickies.com are helping me celebrate by donating three packs of Scripture Stickies for me to give away as part of the January MMM Celebration!

What are Scripture Stickies?

Here’s a preview:

Scripture Stickies work like Post-It notes–just peel off the backing and stick the verses wherever you’ll see them often (for example, on a bathroom mirror, inside a tool box, or wrapped around the jar of Nutella). They’re a convenient way to get started with memory work. Visit their site to see the different themes and packets they’ve created. If you want to order some without waiting for the giveaway, take advantage of a special offer they’re extending to my blog readers: Enter “MMM” as a coupon code, and you’ll receive 20% off your entire order!

You can win one of the three packs by entering your name in the comments on Saturday.

You can certainly leave a comment today. It’ll make me very happy, but it won’t get you entered into the giveway.

So be sure to come back on Saturday.

How will Saturday’s Celebration work?

On that day here at my blog, a post will go live inviting participants to link up their own Celebration Posts.

You can go hog wild with elaborate presentations or keep it super simple.

Last time, technical difficulties foiled a few people’s big plans. If that happens to you, be flexible and don’t worry if something doesn’t work out quite right. Your Plan B could be to simply type it out for us, add a little color and call it a day. Or maybe that’s your Plan A!

Why Celebrate?

The main reason for the Celebration is to take time to recognize how far we’ve come. Every word that is tucked away in our minds and has migrated to our hearts is precious. Regardless of whether or not we’ve met our goals, this was a monumental undertaking and deserves to be noted. If you like, you can also share what memory tips and techniques worked best for you and why; or you might explain how attempting to memorize a longer passage, poem, speech, book excerpt, or song has impacted you over the month.

Will the brain coral return for the next Mega Memory Month?

If the coral featured on the January 2009 MMM button left you a little queasy, you can relax. Look forward to a fresh, new design for the next Mega Memory Month.

But January isn’t over–queasy-readers, avert your eyes! I’m posting the button as often as possible…while there’s still time:

(Consider participating in the Food on Fridays carnival tomorrow!

Any and all food-related posts are welcome to link up!)

Choosing What is Best

Friday’s entry in My Utmost for His Highest explained that when the Spirit fills us, we’re transformed. By beholding God as in a mirror, we become a mirror for others. “Beware of anything that would spot or tarnish that mirror in you,” Chamber writes. “It is almost always something good that will stain it— something good, but not what is best.”

So many good things tempt us to turn away from beholding God and being changed into His likeness. What can we do?

The most important rule for us is to concentrate on keeping our lives open to God. Let everything else including work, clothes, and food be set aside. The busyness of things obscures our concentration on God.

Chambers advises that we let work, clothes and food be set aside if it threatens our focus on God. The list could go on to include writing, TV, Twitter, shopping, reading, clubs, blogging, kids’ activities…it’s so easy to let busyness of all kinds obscure my concentration on God.

If some activity threatens my focus on the Lord, I need to seriously evaluate its place in my life. I need to keep myself open to Him. If something disrupts that, I need to examine the trouble-spot.

Never let a hurried lifestyle disturb the relationship of abiding in Him. This is an easy thing to allow, but we must guard against it. The most difficult lesson of the Christian life is learning how to continue “beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord . . . .”

Did you catch that warning? Never let a hurried lifestyle disturb the relationship of abiding in Him. I have seen it happen in my life–busyness distracts me from the Lord, and I must guard against it.

I’m going too fast if my relationship with the Lord is off-kilter and deteriorating.

During Mega Memory Month, I’m trying to polish off John 14 while dipping into the first 17 verses of John 15. I don’t think I’ll make it through to verse 17 in the days that remain, but as early as the first few lines, Jesus talks about us needing to abide in Him in order to bear fruit, just as a branch remains attached to a vine to bear fruit.

A hurried lifestyle can disrupt a commitment to abiding in Him.

And so I have chosen a slower pace. For years, I’ve been resisting the things that speed up my days or even my mind (Twitter appears to be a recent threat). I don’t want to let the temptation of a hurried lifestyle disturb my relationship of abiding in Him. I want to keep my life open to Him and concentrate on Him, even if it means managing those good things that distract.

Because I want to choose what is best.

Make-Do Mondays: The Christmas Pajama Ordeal

makedomondays

Make-Do Mondays is a carnival dedicated to sharing the creative, frugal or even humble ways we’re making-do.

Here’s my installment for this week’s Make-Do Mondays:

For Christmas I asked for pajamas.

I thought that would be an easy gift for the family to find. After all, if the size was off a little on a blouse, that could be a problem; but surely it wouldn’t matter with pajamas, right?

Well, the family gave me a very cute pair of blue pajamas from Target that looked like they’d work great until I held them up. We quickly determined that the tiny 100 percent cotton pajama set would have been a better fit for my slender 11-year-old daughter than for me. Plus, I have a history of shrinking any item that contains more than 70 percent cotton. If I kept that pajama set, I’d be donating it to the kids’ American Girl collection after its first trip through the wash.

So I sent off The Belgian Wonder to exchange it. He headed back to Target in search of a replacement. When he returned, he reported that the after-Christmas pickings were slim and pulled out of the bag the only option he could find. We unfolded what turned out to be a surely mis-tagged tent-like set of pink pajamas.

So I gave up.

Someday soon I hope to find something that works nicely and fits the budget.

For now, I’m making-do with my comfy old T-shirts and sweat pants, like I did before the Christmas Pajama Ordeal.

Hey, the sweat pants are pretty cute, if I do say so myself.

And even better?

They fit.

How about you? How are you making-do?

To join the Make-Do Mondays carnival, leave a link in the comments (Sorry, but Mr. Linky prefers only one post per day, and I already dedicated it to MMM). I’ll update this post by hand with names and links here:

Final Celebration Reminder

Okay, so here’s the thing–this is the last checkpoint before the Final Celebration.

On January 31st, I will put up a Final Celebration post, where all participants are encouraged to create something that illustrates their Mega Memory Month project.

You can:

  • Record a video
  • Create an audio recording
  • Type it out
  • Design something visual with scrapbook art
  • Illustrate your passage with photos, like a PowerPoint presentation

It’s up to you how involved and creative you want to be. It’s a chance to learn a new technology (I learned to upload YouTube videos and others learned to record and link to audio files), or just have some fun with a calligraphy set.

So as you finish up your last few days of memorization, be thinking about how to celebrate on your blog. Don’t be intimidated–just have fun! Be yourself and reflect your personality, just like you always do on your blog.

Mega Memory Month Giveaway!

The lovely folks at Scripture Stickies have provided a great giveaway to accompany the MMM Final Celebration. Scripture Stickies are packs of printed Scripture passages grouped by theme that you can use to stick in strategic places–the bathroom mirror, the kitchen door, the car dashboard–in order to review frequently.

If you win, I’ll mail you a pack to try out. You can use them yourself for the next Mega Memory Month project, or give them as a gift to someone who wants an easy way to kickstart their own attempts at Scripture memory.

For a chance at winning, stop by on January 31st and leave a friendly comment!

P.S. My Apologies for Technical Glitch

Boy was I aggravated when I realized that somehow in the process of “freshening up” my blog, the main Mega Memory Month post lost all the links.

All of you precious participants–I apologize for that! I put links to your blogs back in. If your link doesn’t work, please let me know and provide me with the right one.

Ann’s Progress

Well, I love the Frost poem. During church, through big windows on the side of the sanctuary, we could all see enormous downy snowflakes the size of quarters drifting from the sky–it was like worshiping in a snow globe. One of the pastors quoted from Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, let us reason together,”

       says the LORD.

“Though your sins are like scarlet,

they shall be as white as snow.”

I hoped the flakes would continue so that we could swing by the park. I wanted to watch the snow piling up in the woods, Frost-like. But by the time church let out, the flakes were no longer the size of quarters; they were tiny flecks. And by the time we got near the park, it wasn’t snowing at all.

With or without the inspiration of snow, I can recite “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” by Robert Frost.

And I continue to piece together John 14. I hope to have it all flowing smoothly by Saturday–still have some hiccups.

I was inspired by the link Amy (Lavender *Sparkles*) provided–it took me to a video of a guy who recites long passages in a somewhat theatrical style, like a dramatic reading, only entirely from memory.

Years ago I directed drama sketches. Maybe I need to “direct” myself, to finish it off? This will be my experiment during the final few days of memory work.

What about you? Report on your progress–bring us up to date!

Food on Fridays

fof

I write about some aspect of food often enough that I decided to dedicate a day to it.

The only logical choice?

Fridays, of course, for that great “F” alliteration. I like saying, “I host a carnival on my blog called ‘Food on Fridays’.” It’s fun!

Anyway, if you write about food fairly frequently, why not make it on Fridays, too, and join me here?

Food posts don’t have to be a recipe–anything remotely related to food is great: You could take a pretty picture of muffins to post, or you might read and review The Omnivore’s Dilemma or Green Eggs and Ham. Anything that mentions food–bring it on! Post it! Link it!.

Use Mr. Linky and/or the comments to link-in, and I’ll go back in later and post links the old-fashioned way right here in the text to ensure maximum search-engine-exposure.

Ann’s Food on Fridays contribution:

I love Nutella.

nutella-jar.jpg

My family knows it, so I was given Nutella for Christmas.

My friends know it, so I was given two giant jars for my birthday.

My blog-readers know it, because I have a category dedicated to Nutella, which I created after publishing this post back in January 2007.

Nutella is European–Italian, to be precise.

You can visit the Nutella USA site for additional info. For example:

  • Did you know that Nutella, which is sold in the peanut-butter aisle in America, is marketed in over 75 countries and outsells all brands of peanut butter worldwide?
  • The creator invented Nutella in the 1940s when cocoa was rationed during the war. He added hazelnuts, which were plentiful in Italy, to extend the chocolate supply.
  • And their recommended usage is to spread it on various bread products. They’ve photographed and published examples on this page (be still my heart!).

Facebook users? Apparently there are numerous Nutella fan groups you can join.

Our Top Personal Nutella Applications:

  • Spread on fresh French bread
  • Dip fruit into it
  • Spread in crepes
  • Spread in crepes with bits of banana cut up with it

lone nutella

But the most impressive Nutella news of all?

World Nutella Day is coming up on February 5, 2009 !

Seriously! They have a button and everything:

button2009

So, what about you?

Write about food and tell me all about it–right now, for Food on Fridays!

And if you love Nutella, write about it, publish your post on February 5, and tell the lovely ladies hosting World Nutella Day so they can include your wonderful Nutella thoughts.

Barber Chair Reflections

After I posted “Freshening Up,” it occurred to me that my choice of a barber chair to represent haircuts and trims might have come across decidedly unfeminine.

I suddenly realized, Why, that’s a man-chair!

Why didn’t I choose a compact mirror with powder or blush to illustrate “freshening up”?

blush1

Or lipgloss application?

lipgloss

Even a women’s hair dryer, for that matter?

hairdryer

Why the inexplicable comfort level with–even attraction to–an old barber shop chair?

As you can see, I began to feel a little self-conscious about my choice.

Then last night memories drifted through dreams, and I awoke this morning remembering that when I was a little girl, my mom would send me off with my dad to Buck the Barber’s.

I vaguely recall Buck as an old and fairly frail, slender man. His one chair, as antique in style as yesterday’s example, was mounted in the center of a wood-paneled room. Some mirrors hung on one side of the room; I think an old calendar dangled from a thumbtack on the wall, and there may have been a gumball machine by the door.

Dad always got in the chair first, and the old barber would trim Dad’s thin hair and sideburns, and clip his beard or mustache when he had one. After Buck brushed away the stray hairs, it was my turn.

Buck grabbed a couple of telephone books to prop me up.

Then he’d drape the cape around me and set to work lining up my bangs as best he could.

My mom’s theory was that he didn’t feel like he had much to do when trimming my bangs, so he’d always comb forward a few extra hairs so that he was actually clipping something.

Visit after visit, my bangs crept farther and farther back–instead of a wispy fringe framing my face, those bangs eventually sprouted from the crown of my head.

I think I’m modeling a Buck the Barber ‘do in this photo I scanned for your amusement:

annie

Now you know. During my formative years, that little girl you see nervously fidgeting in the photo above regularly climbed into a barber chair like the one below for a trim.

barber-chair1

After returning to the barber shop chair of my youth, I find myself strangely warming to the idea of bangs.

And…I love the chair.

Freshening Up

Someday I might go for an Extreme Blog Makeover.

For now?

barber-chair

For now, I just want to freshen it up with a trim–snip a little off the sides, take a bit off the top, even up the bangs. Nothing too dramatic.

Basically, I’m just picking a new layout and updating the header with a word-lovin’, writerly theme.

Be patient, in case I lose a few widgets in the process.

It’s like buying a set of clippers and trying them out on one of your kids for the first time. It may not come out perfectly straight at first.

Time Are Hard

[Updated: Whoops. Left a little too quickly this morning. Of course the title of this post should be "Times" are hard. Otherwise it suggests an enigmatic statement about the Theory of Relativity mixed with a "Kids 'R' Us" phrasing.]

Yesterday, The Belgian Wonder and I turned into the Goodwill parking lot.

“Look!” I cried out. “A limo! At Goodwill! Quick, let’s get a picture. If this isn’t blog-worthy, I don’t know what is!”

timesarehard1

See it?

On the left, trunk open, ready to stash bags of secondhand jeans, old lamps and used crock pots, was parked a long, white limousine.

The Belgian Wonder obliged by cruising slowly through the lot, helping snap photos.

This shot shows it better.

timesarehard2

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Someone told me that more consumers are turning to thrift stores and that shopping Goodwill is the new chic…
