Mary Pipher writes, “De Frain talks about the 20-to-1 ratio. Strong families have roughly twenty positive comments for every negative one” (p. 228, The Shelter of Each Other).
Hmm….
How many positive comments today?
How many negative?
Pleasant words are a honeycomb,
sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
(Proverbs 16:24)

Something else good to think about this Advent… how many positives comments do I give? How many negative…
WoW! This is totally relevant to me today Ann, I have been thinking what a WITCH i am being in the way that I speak! I am going to think about being honeycomb instead “O)
What a good thing to keep in mind! It’s amazing how one negative comment can undo all the good that a positive comment may have made.
Let’s bee sweet!
Thanks for the reminder…I want to be one of those “strong” families…anyday, everyday!
We have been working on this in our house … I hope we can be one of the strong!!!
And how to be positive without an agenda! (Like, “you made your bed so well today!” — right Mom, we get it.)
But to genuinely appreciate each person — for what he wants to be appreciated for! That’s my quest.
Oh, good one. Now I’ll be counting compliments (my own, of course : )
What a great post. And so very true. blessings.
